Scientific Name: Syzygium australe
Plant Family: Myrtaceae
Syzygium Resilience is a superb selection of Syzygium australe, or more commonly known as a Lilly Pilly. It is a versatile tree that produces spectacular colourful new foliage which mature into deep green, glossy leaves. Resilience produces masses of cream coloured, powder puff flowers that are highly attractive to native animals and insects, these are followed by a scattering of bright pink juicy fruits that can be used as a bush food! Syzygium Resilience is highly resistant to psyllids, which cause an unsightly deformation of the leaves. A wonderful native plant that has been released under the Elite Flora range!
Syzygium Resilience will grow in a diverse range of environmental conditions, including hot, humid tropics in the north to cool temperate areas in southern states. Resilience has a low watering requirement once established. It will benefit from a yearly application of slow release fertiliser applied in Spring. Pruning is not necessary but can be done to maintain a more compact form, especially when using it as a hedge. A specialised propagation technique has been used to improve this plant making it faster growing, having a straighter central leader and a stronger root system.
Syzygium Resilience can be used in a variety of ways including, as a specimen / display tree, hedging, or en masse as a landscape plant. The fruit can be used as a fresh bush food with the fruit being edible straight off the tree, however some people find them a bit sour. The flesh can be used to make jams, sauces and syrups.
