Scientific Name: Melicope rubra
Plant Family: Rutaceae
Melicope Blush is a versatile native, small evergreen tree that has glossy green foliage and produces clusters of deep pink coloured flowers along its stems and branches, attracting butterflies and birds. After flowering, green spherical fruit can form which are very aromatic.
A specialised propagation technique has been used to improve this plant making it faster growing, having a straighter central leader and a stronger root system. We can now supply this plant all year.
Melicope Blush will grow in a diverse range of environmental conditions, including hot, humid tropics in the north to cooler areas in southern states and will happily grow on windswept coastal areas to rainforest areas on the ranges.
Melicope Blush has a low watering requirement once established. It will benefit from a yearly application of slow release fertiliser applied in Spring.
Pruning is not necessary but can be done to maintain a more compact form.
A wonderful native feature tree in any garden or landscape. Being a small tree it is perfect for smaller house blocks and public spaces. The masses of bright pink flowers that cover the stems and branches are highly attractive to birds and insects. Many species of honeyeaters use this tree as a food source. In northern Queensland, it is the host tree for the Ulysses and Orchard Swallowtail butterflies. Many other butterflies and insects have been recorded feeding on it's nectar rich flowers.
