Gardenia White Star is a hardy selection of the native Gardenia psidioides 'Glennie River'.
It has a semi-prostrate growth habit, with new central growth being very upright and then cascading outwards as the new growth lengthens. The leaves are deep green and have a slight crinkled look and have a slightly rough texture about them. Gardenia White Star produces pure white, star-shaped flowers throughtout the warmer months of the year. The flowers are slightly scented.
A specialised propagation technique has been used to improve this plant making it faster growing, having a straighter central leader and a stronger root system.
Gardenia White Star will grow in a diverse range of environmental conditions, including hot, humid tropics in the north to cool areas in the south. It will grow in a full sun to semi-shade position.
Gardenia White Star has a low watering requirement once established. It will benefit from a yearly application of slow release fertiliser applied in Spring.
Pruning is not necessary but can be done to maintain a more compact form or to maintain it as a border or low hedge.
Gardenia White Star is a very versatile plant and can be used in various situations. It can be grown in a pot plant which produces a lovely cascading effect out and over the pot. It is extensively used as a feature plant or low border / hedging plant. It produces perfumed white star shaped flowers.
